For my first real post and review, I decided to review a J-drama comedy that is an absolute favorite of mine Sticking to the theme of long Japanese names, Why Can’t Seiya Toudoin, Age 16, Get a Girlfriend? is nothing short of comedic genius.
Seiya and his beautiful face
The story is a simple one, following the protagonist Seiya Toudoin, whose got it all; athleticism, intelligence, good looks, and money. But the one thing he doesn’t have is, as the show’s title implies, a girlfriend. The story, while not very original, is certainly one with a lot of potential. And quite frankly I think it delivers. The opening episode has a scene I reference as my favorite scene in the whole show, where Seiya frantically dives after a run away eraser across the classroom. The eraser itself is also made of some sort of ridiculous bouncy material, because whenever Seiya tries to secure it, it slips out of his grasp. The scene is made better with the slow motion added to it and dramatic opera music.
Without spoiling too much, each episode of the show revolves around Seiya trying to pursue a new love interest. Each episode has a new sub-plot involving Seiya’s attempts at love, and it does not get stale. However, the show can have awkward moments at times, especially with the interactions between Seiya and his butler. But I’ll let you see for yourself.
At just 9 episodes in total, this short but fun show delivers laughs (at least to me) on many different levels. It’s only downside to me, is that it is too short. Given that it is based off of a manga by the same name, I would’ve thought they would have more content to work with. So here’s hoping for a second season! If I had to give it a grade, I would say… 8/10. Definitely something worth watching, and, if you didn’t like it, it was only 9 episodes. Give it a try!
