Do you have any episodes of an anime that you just can’t help but go back to and re-watch, no matter how many times you have seen it? For any number of reasons, these episodes are special to you. Be it because they allow you to relive the nostalgia of when you first watched the show, the episode always has you on the edge of your seat (even when you know the conclusion), or even if it just always manages to send you to your “happy place,” these episodes are important to you. For me in particular, I use these episodes to allow me to escape reality, if just for a short time, and collect my thoughts. Particularly when I am having a bad day.
Today was one of those bad days, and it felt like I couldn’t catch a break. I had originally planned to do a Nagisa Oshima film review today, but Hulu had other plans. The “Criterion Collection” of Hulu migrated to a different website only four days ago, right under my nose (though I suppose that isn’t hard because I have a Squidward Tentacles/Pinocchio-esque nose). However, all hope was not initially lost, since I was able to start a free trial on said new website. Unbeknownst to me, though, they had for some reason decided to add all of the other Nagisa Oshima films over to this new site, EXCEPT the one I planned on reviewing. Thus causing immense frustration. So I will probably have to put those film reviews on hold until I return to the U.S. in December. To add to that, I spent too much money on chocolate today (which wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t eat it all in one sitting) and now I think I am starting to get sick.
But! I was able to salvage this day still, by watching one of my favorite “never gets old” episodes. And that episode is “A Day in the Life of the Fujioka Family” from Ouran High School Host Club. If you have seen the show, it is the episode where the members of the host club plan a surprise visit to Haruhi at her home and meet her cross-dressing father. This episode isn’t all that special, aside from the fact that it is really funny. However it always seems to set me in a good mood, no matter how many times I have seen it. The jokes don’t get stale even if I know exactly when they are happening, and it is just an all around enjoyable experience.
Though that isn’t my only favorite episode to go back to. Some of my others are the final episode of The Devil is a Part-Timer called “The Devil and the Hero Do Some Honest Hard Work.” This episode is a pretty lackluster final episode, as the climax and what can be considered the conclusion actually come the episode before this. However the episode just has a certain charm that I find myself unable to resist.
Other shows that I have these favorites in vary from Nisekoi, Toradora!, Naruto, Yamada’s First Time, Sword Art Online, Servant x Service, Deadman Wonderland, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun, and even my childhood favorite Zatch Bell. Each of these shows are among my favorites, and even if I don’t re-watch the entire show, I will always find myself going back to at least one or two episodes from each.
I would also like to know if any of you have any specific favorite episodes you love to re-watch. How many times do you think you have seen those episodes? Also, do you have an episode that never fails to cheer you up when you are feeling down? Did I steal any of your favorites? Let me know in the comments below! Thanks for reading!
Great subject. Yes I know what you mean, there are things that I can rewatch over and over again. I recently did a post called to rewatch or not to rewatch, which listed a couple of movies that I can watch over and over again.
As for Anime, yes I have a couple of them as well. I loved Another, and both episodes 11 and 12 were so incredibly good that I can rewatch those over and over again. Macross (or Robotech, whatever you grew up with) had an episode where the Earth was surrounded by 4 million alien warships. That episode pretty much hooked me on Anime. Other shows that spring to mind are Sword Art Online, Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex and Orguss 02.

Ahh I will definitely have to check that post out. As for movies, I can definitely think of a couple. Groundhog Day being one.
Oh goodness, 4 million warships sounds a bit excessive. But interesting nonetheless! Yeah, Ghost in the Shell definitely has a ton of episodes that fit the mold.
Thanks for sharing!

I’m sorry to hear you have had such a crummy day. ;__; Watching anime episodes that are old favorites is a pretty great way to get through such tough times, though, I admit.
I think I’ve watched episode 14 of Saki Achiga-hen at least a dozen times. I just love how Arata’s emotional fondness for her role model shines through as she scores hand after hand.
I’m also fond of Yuki Yuna is a Hero episode 11 (Karin-chan ;__;) as well as Maoyuu Maou Yuusha episode 9. I’ve been meaning to contribute to Karandi’s I am Human post for months now about that particular scene, but I’ve been struggling with how to phrase it haha.
Keep your chin up, WeeaboOtaku ;_;

Oh man, I definitely have to check those out. You can learn a lot about people from what their favorite episodes are. The “I am Human” post is a really great one, I think. I’m curious to see your response to that now!
Thanks for the words of encouragement! I made it through the day which is all that matters in the end.

Gahhh sorry about the double posting. You can delete the second one if you’d like.
That’s a good point. The window to a person’s soul is their favorite anime episodes, right?
(I also liked episode 18 of Clannad Afterstory. I’m a big softie. All these episodes always get me to cry even though I’ve seen them multiple times)
I think it’s great, too. That’s why I’m struggling with that comment haha. Wouldn’t want to smear the post with something moronic.
You’re very welcome. Yay I’m glad you survived! Only three more of those and you’ve reached the weekend and momentary reprieve.

I can’t say that I watch a bunch of single episodes, but one which never fails to make me smile is ‘Day of Sagittarius’ from Haruhi, where the SOS Brigade goes up against the Computer Club. I like it because I think it showcases all of the character’s personalities so well in a relatively everyday setting.
I actually just finished up ‘The Devil Is a Part Timer’ and I must say that I really liked it. I think that the series will become a fast favourite with me and I’d love to see it get a second season!

Ahh that is a great episode of Haruhi. Did you know that they made a “Day of Sagittarius” game based off of the game from that episode? I remember googling it to see if such a thing existed after I watched that episode, and it does! It is on the appstore I think, but it costs real people money so I haven’t purchased it yet.
Yeah it is definitely one of my favorites. It has been awhile so a season two’s chances looking grim, but at least the LNs are being officially translated into English.

I didn’t know that there was a Day of Sagittarius game! Having a look though, there actually looks like there’s a flash version (http://void.heteml.jp/flash/tdos3_sa/), but I felt pretty much like Mikuru trying to get that to work. My strengths in gaming are pretty much JRPGs only 😀

Oh that is pretty neat. I will have to check it out, though I feel like my attempt will probably be the same as yours.

I love the episode of SAO where Kirito meets Lisbeth.
Generally though I don’t really love individual episodes within a show preferring to watch the whole show.

Ahh that is an interesting choice. I think my favorite SAO episode has to be when Kirito and Asuna meet Yui. Something about the lack of danger in that episode puts me at ease.
Understandable, for lack of time though I usually just watch a few favorite episodes. But you’re right, I would prefer to just watch the entire show again.

I also kind of like the Alice in Wonderland themed episode in Ouran High School Host Club. It’s incredibly pointless in terms of the overall narrative because the character development highlighted in the episode is explored elsewhere but I just kind of like the randomness of it, plus the twins dressed as cats.

That is funny, I think that was my least favorite episode when I first watched it for the reasons you mentioned. Now I feel neutral about it. But true, you can’t beat the twins dressed as cats.

I also really didn’t like it when I watched the series but the few times I want an individual episode I think of it because it is just kind of an isolated thing (and twins dressed as cats).

When I need to cheer up a bit, any episode from Nichijou or Nozaki-kun works wonders.
Hope the review problem will take care of itself soon.

Ahh Nozaki-kun is always a pick-me-up show to watch. I haven’t seen Nichijou yet, but it is on my “to watch” list.

Nice post! And yes, I do have lots of episodes I love re-watching for some strange reasons. One of them is Killua and Illumi’s encounter during the Hunter Exam (HunterXHunter). I found that episode and scene scary but for some reason, exciting.
Thanks for sharing your own list! Ouran High School Club is an awesome series!

Oh, I thought I had posted my comment but I guess my fat finger didn’t push send.
I’m sorry to hear that today (or is it yesterday by now?) was rough for you. They should earn customers about that! Hopefully watching some of the episodes you mentioned here helped you relax and de-stress.
I watch some emotional scenes from time to time (episode 9 of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha where Big Sister Maid talks about her past in front of a crowd as she is being treated as a heretic; episode 11 in YuYuYu where Karin finally becomes a true hero and sacrifices her body to keep her friends safe), but as for full episodes, it would be episode 14 of Saki Achiga-hen. Arata trying her best to fulfill the goal her role model couldn’t in her time just gets me choked up. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times?
I hope today was a better day for you.
